Sofia – grows, but does not get old

Sofia is one of the oldest cities in Europe with archeological remains 6 000 years old. It is situated in the Sofia plain with elevation above sea- level 550 meters on the territory of 1,311 square meters with population 1 177 000 /2001 г./. The immediate proximity of the mountain Vitosha, the wealth of the hydro mineral resources /15 mineral springs as well as one of the biggest reservoirs in Bulgaria- Iskar, in combination with the favorable natural- climatic conditions are unique facts for the Bulgarian capital.

Sofia is a center of the society- political, social- economic and international life of the country. It is the communicational heart of Bulgaria, and also a center of calmness, security and prosperity of the Balkans.

Sofia has a well-built and consistent with the climatic and relief specifications infrastructure. The transport system of the capital is well developed and is a significant part of the national transport system. The air transport is represented by the biggest airport in the country and is the center for directing the air movement. Bulgaria is a parliamentary republic. The national assembly is a supreme, permanently acting body. The state leader is the president.

On the second of April 2004 officially was announced that Bulgaria becomes a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO.

Since the first of January 2007 Republic of Bulgaria is a member of the European Union.
